THE SHORT ANSWER

How to save a search on AbeBooks

AbeBooks calls its saved book searches “Wants.” Its help guide explains how to create a Want and receive emails when matching copies are listed.

  1. 01

    Search for the book.

When there are no copies, open the Save your search menu and choose Create a Want.

  2. 02

    Enter the book details.

Use distinct title and author terms, then save with Add Want.

  3. 03

    Manage your Want.

Use My Wants in your account to update it and choose whether to receive matching-copy emails.

AbeBooks advises using search terms rather than prose instructions in Wants. Keep your longer condition requirements in a Poacher brief.

SAVE THE IMPORTANT DETAILS

What to include in your AbeBooks search

Reading copyAuthor, title or ISBN, language, binding and your budget.
Collector’s copyEdition and printing, publisher, publication year and original jacket.
ConditionState whether ex-library copies, inscriptions, repairs or missing pages are acceptable.
CostInclude shipping in your ceiling if it changes which copy is worth buying.

The same title is not always the same book

A reading copy, a first printing and a copy in its original dust jacket are different searches. Start with the author and title, then describe the physical copy you want: publisher, year, binding, printing and jacket. A low price on a modern reprint is not a bargain if you are collecting the original edition.

Wants work best with precise search fields

AbeBooks calls its saved requests Wants. Its guidance favors concise title, author or ISBN details and warns that prose instructions are not interpreted by a person. Keep the native fields simple. Use a Poacher brief for requirements such as an intact jacket, no library markings or no print-on-demand copies.

What to check when an out-of-print copy appears

Look at the seller’s description of the actual copy, not just a stock cover. Check missing pages, inscriptions, binding repairs and jacket condition. Poacher can screen the available listing information against your brief; a seller photo or confirmation may still be needed to establish a printing or signature.

A MORE SPECIFIC ALERT

Edition, jacket and condition belong together

For a collectible book, matching a title is the beginning. A useful alert records which edition you want, which defects you can accept, and which details need evidence in the seller’s description.

Edition and printing

Say whether first edition is enough, or whether you need a particular printing. Do not infer either from the cover alone.

Dust jacket

Require an original jacket if that matters. Exclude facsimile jackets or jacket-only listings.

Condition

Mention ex-library markings, missing pages, inscriptions and repairs you want to avoid.

EXCLUDE

Later printing, no jacket

The title matches; the edition and jacket do not.

What to know about this source

Bibliographic claims still need confirmation from the seller. A photo or short listing may not establish a printing, signature or jacket’s originality. Poacher does not authenticate books.

QUESTIONS

AbeBooks alerts, explained.

What is an AbeBooks Want?

A saved request that searches for matching books and can email you when a copy appears.

Should I use an ISBN for a first edition?

An ISBN can identify a publication but is not enough to establish every collectible feature of a physical copy. Include the edition and printing evidence you require.

Can I ask for no ex-library copies?

Yes, add that requirement to your Poacher brief. It checks the available listing description rather than treating a book title as sufficient evidence.

Can an alert guarantee authenticity?

No. Descriptions and photos can be incomplete or incorrect. Ask the seller for copy-specific evidence before an important purchase.

Can I look for an original dust jacket?

Yes. Specify original jacket, whether price clipping or tears are acceptable, and whether a facsimile is excluded.

What if a matching book has already sold?

A match is not a reservation. Availability can change before you buy; follow the listing to check its current status.
